Credit crunch – how does it affect us, immigrants?

Heavy clouds hanging over London's job market

The job market is getting tight so it may be possible that advertised jobs are more likely to go to native British people, as a natural patriotic gesture. It is definitely tough for newcomers without previous experience in England. Even low paid, unskilled jobs are going to graduates struggling to find a job in their field, or to the newly redundant.

Apparently, in a recent Planning Seminar given in New Zealand, young people wanting to go to London for work, money and fun are being advised to postpone their plans for a year or two. Some Europeans may be considering going back home where the financial situation isn’t so bad. But with so much movement going on, there are bound to be a great deal of opportunities in London if you’re ready and willing to stand out from the crowd.

I believe that immigrants who have been here for a few years, who have gone through the hard times already, are now immune and strong enough to survive these uncertain times. As I said before, maybe we can’t make huge progress in the career ladder for the next year, so this is the time to do something new, to invest in developing ourselves, and to obtain new skills
