This article came in handy. I tried to send a small amount of money to the Czech Republic (under £20) through the bank and discovered that they have a minimum transfer amount of £25, and not only that it was going to cost me $17 in transfer costs!

Paypal was not an option because I don't speak the receiver's language and because the receiver needs to have a Paypal account for it to work.

I went to the Western Union website in the end. After 5 minutes filling out my details and a phone-call to customer service to authorise the transfer, it was done. Transfer cost £4.90. Not great, but much better than going through the bank!
